Full Report:

After spending a memorable afternoon at Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park, M and I were ready to get some dinner.  As the Hondori Shopping Arcade was very close to the park, we decided to try and catch a bite to eat there.  At this point in the trip we’d consumed so much Japanese food that we were looking for something a bit different.  As we strolled down the arcade, that something different materialized in front of us in the form of Saizeriya!

Saizeriya is a very popular Italian restaurant chain in Japan.  One of its claims to fame is that you can buy everything on their menu for approximately 26,000 Yen (roughly $260 US).  It is also a very popular spot for getting cheap liquor —– a glass of wine is a mere 100 Yen!   Here’s a sampling of their menu:

We each ordered a soup and a pasta entree: carbonara and seafood chowder for me, meat sauce spaghetti and corn chowder for M.  The portions were on the small side, but I was able to get full by the time I finished my meal.  M was still hungry and he got a side of garlic bread and a small bacon + salami pizza.  All this came out to only 1800 JPY!  While it wasn’t the best Italian food we ever ate, it was definitely satisfying and how can you beat that price?  With over 750 locations, this restaurant is everywhere in Japan, including a large number of stores in Tokyo.
